Leaner Schnitzer'll tune X1
The BMW X1 has been tuned by AC Schnitzer, but the German firm has concentrated on the more frugal engines first.

AC Schnitzer is not the shy and retiring type when it comes to tuning BMWs, but even this German tuner has got in line with current trends to concentrate its first efforts on the more environmentally sound models in the BMW X1 range.

To begin with, AC Schnitzer will offer uprated versions of the three turbodiesel engines, and all will make their debuts at the Geneva Motor Show. The 1.8-litre diesel used in the sDrive18d is increased in power to 169bhp, while the same engine used in the sDrive20d improves to 207bhp. Buyers can choose the more powerful 20d engine for both rear- and four-wheel drive X1 models.

The xDrive23d has its power upped to 237bhp from 201bhp in the standard car, though AC Schnitzer has yet to publish any performance figures so we can gauge the increase in acceleration and top speed. AC Schnitzer is also working on a new exhaust system for the xDrive28i petrol model.

Distinguishing the Schnitzer X1 from the standard model is easy thanks to the body kit that is part of the Schnitzer upgrade. It includes a new bonnet with added vents, revised front and rear bumpers with larger spoilers, and a rear roof spoiler. There are also new alloy wheels in sizes from 18- to 20-inches.

Underneath, AC Schnitzer has improved the X1's driving dynamics with the addition of an aluminium strut brace across the front suspension top mounts, and new springs and shock absorbers all round.

Inside, it wouldn't be a tuned car from Germany without some carbon fibre trim, so the Schnitzer X1 dutifully has some plastered over the dash. There's also new aluminium trim around the iDrive selector.

Unlike many show cars at the Geneva Show, the AC Schnitzer X1 will be on sale immediately through distributors in individual countries. No prices as yet, but the Schnitzer-ised X1 can be ordered in the UK right after the show.
